In 1996, a group of like-minded youth (mostly ex-students of Ramakrishna Mission and members of ASHA FOR EDUCATION from India and abroad, inspired by the message of SWAMI VIVEKANANDA to stand by the suffering mass, assembled and after a series of discussion with the local people founded the organization Vivekananda Educational Society For Children (VESC) to address the problem of child labour. It runs two schools at Jagaddal and Sonarpur in the South 24-Parganas district of West Bengal, India, which are located just outside the Kolkata metropolis. The children who attend these schools come from extremely impoverished families. Their parents are unable to afford the books, clothes and associated expenses to keep them in nearby government schools. Further, the quality and educational content of the government schools do not encourage students’ participation in the mainstream educational system. Thus, the children are driven to work at tea stalls, cycle repair shops, waste paper collection units and fisheries. VESC has brought child laborers into the mainstream educational system through community involvement. It is a society registered under the W.B. Societies Registration Act XXVI of 1961 with registration number of S/86579 of 1997-98.
